LEVERAGING BIG DATA FOR OIL & GAS

13:25       INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
Data: The 21st Century Crude Oil

Drawing on real-world case studies from existing EDI projects, this session will examine:

  • How data is data being leveraged for making tactical and strategic decisions
  • A business level overview of the technological components and concepts that are being used to leverage data, the difference between industrial (big) data in terms of it’s “$ intensity” and size from the “big data” of the consumer facing industries
  • Distinguishing between the analytics & modelling techniques used in applications where the physical relations are known and in applications where the physical relations are unknown or too complex to model with a conventional approach
  • Understanding how modern technology is leveraging data to discover both the issues and correlations, the “unknown-unknowns”
  • Exploring use-cases from actual projects in the hydrocarbon industry where smart use of data has made major differences to profitability and resulted in a complete overhaul of the business process, sometimes referred to as “Silent Business Process Re-engineering”.

Partha Ray, Vice President Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Consulting, SIEMENS

13:55       KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
Smart E&P requires smart thinking – is the industry ready?

This presentation will discuss how those charged with managing E&P information and
data can
attempt to turn the industry oil tanker towards a more digitally aware, and
profitable, future. Costs are crippling the oil and gas business, especially in Australia.
Globally, it is chasing techniques to produce hydrocarbons more cost effectively.
21st Century thinking suggests that Information Technology would have a major role
to play. However the promise of a data-driven O&G business is compromised by a
20th century view of the role IT has to play. Whilst APPEA proclaims we are a
technology industry, most E&P engineers think of “technology” as mechanical.
Meanwhile the “data-scientist”sees how information can contribute to reducing costs
and, more importantly, how it can be used to dramatically increase revenue. In this
session, oil and gas industry data and information management expert, Andy Moore,
will explore how the IT arm of the business can convince a sceptical leadership that
really using information as an asset and relying on predictive data models can
revolutionise the industry as it has for banking retail and manufacturing.

Andy MooreInformation, Data & KM Expert & Thought-Leader - OIL & GAS INDUSTRY
