Supporting Bodies

Supporting partners at Australian Energy Week 2016

The Australian Energy Council represents 22 major electricity and downstream natural gas businesses operating in competitive wholesale and retail energy markets. These businesses collectively generate the overwhelming majority of electricity in Australia and sell gas and electricity to over 10 million homes and businesses.

The energy council began operating from 1 January 2016. With Australia’s energy industry undergoing a period of rapid, transformative change member companies of the Energy Supply Association of Australia (esaa), the Energy Networks Association (ENA) and the Energy Retailers Association of Australia (ERAA) decided  to reorganise and rationalise their representative associations in 2015.

From 1 January 2016, the merchant, non-network energy businesses commenced the Australian Energy Council and the ERAA merged into this new organisation.

Matthew Warren appointed current esaa Chief Executive, Matthew Warren, as its inaugural Chief Executive. Interim ERAA Chief Executive Alex Fraser was retained by the Australian Energy Council as its General Manager, Retail.

The ENA continues to serve its network members and absorbed the responsibility for Grid Australia activities on behalf of the electricity transmission sector.

The Centre for Market Design (CMD) is a research centre jointly funded by the Commonwealth Treasury, the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance and the University of Melbourne, until December 2017.

We support policy innovation by applying economic design techniques to public policy, procurement and resource allocation problems. We have particular expertise in mechanism design, auction theory, matching markets, experimental economics, and structural econometrics.

The CMD was created specifically to build capabilities needed in economic design and to harness these ideas and techniques to create solutions to ‘real world’ public policy problems. Visit our Research and Policy pages to find out more about our work.
